Overheight vehicles strike prestressed concrete girders on overpasses every year, and corrosion attacks strands in girders under leaking joints and in marine air. This course covers how to inspect, assess and repair that damage. It is built on three public sources. The first is NCHRP Report 280, Guidelines for Evaluation and Repair of Prestressed Concrete Bridge Members (Shanafelt and Horn, 1985), which includes full-scale tests on an AASHTO Type III girder. The second is its predecessor, NCHRP Report 226, Damage Evaluation and Repair Methods for Prestressed Concrete Bridge Members (1980). The third is the 2012 Guide to Recommended Practice for the Repair of Impact-Damaged Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders, from NCHRP Project 20-07 Task 307 (Harries and others, University of Pittsburgh), which adds CFRP methods and a damage classification. Code provisions are quoted as these sources state them; confirm article numbers against current editions. Worked numbers are labeled illustrative.
