Bridge Management Systems and Performance Measures

1 PDH · about 60 minutes · Course no. BR-M01 · Instructor: Michael Craig, PE

About the instructor

Michael Craig, PE is Senior Vice President and Southeast Director at Strinteg Corporation, leading bridge inspection and structural engineering across eight states and Puerto Rico. In 27+ years he has inspected over 4,000 structures and completed 3,000+ load ratings and 160+ load tests. He has managed repair and preservation design for complex bridges, including cable-stayed bridges. He holds PE licenses in twelve states, DC and Puerto Rico, SPRAT Level 1, and FAA Part 107 credentials.

Bridge management turns inspection data into investment decisions. This course explains the federal framework that now governs that process for National Highway System (NHS) bridges: the minimum standards for bridge management systems and the risk-based Transportation Asset Management Plan (TAMP) in 23 CFR Part 515, and the national bridge condition measures, targets, significant progress determinations and structurally deficient deck-area minimum in 23 CFR Part 490. It shows how element condition data and deterioration forecasting feed life-cycle planning, how FHWA's Bridge Preservation Guide connects preservation work types to condition, and how the bridge engineer's ratings ultimately become a state's reported Good and Poor percentages.
